  14. Welcome to InstaRel.  The purpose of this program is to find out who is related to you so that you can share
  15. research.  This is accomplished by comparing your {GEDCOM:GEDCOM} file with other people's GEDCOM files.  To do
  16. this, you must load in your GEDCOM file into "Your" database, and then load a friend's (who may soon become your
  17. relative) GEDCOM file into "Their" database.  You can load as many GEDCOM files as you wish into each database. 
  18. When you start the comparison process, you will get a report of possible "matches."  This is a list of ancestors
  19. in "their" GEDCOM file that match your ancestors found in your GEDCOM file.

  28. To increase the number of possible matches that show up in your {report:StartCompare}, you can lower the threshold. 
  29. This may cause you to get matches that are not really matches.

  31. To change the threshold edit the file called "RULES".  Find the line at the bottom of the file containing the word
  32. "threshold".  For example you may see the following:

  36. Change the 190 to a higher number or lower number.  Experiment with this number until you get a match report that
  37. you like.  The threshold can be changed after you load the GEDCOM files into your database.

  39. A future version of InstaRel will allow you to change this value from within the program.

  42.  What is GEDCOM? ▐

  44. GEDCOM is an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication.  You may have a computer program that stores your
  45. genealogy information.  That information is stored on your computer in a way that only your computer program knows
  46. how to access.  But what if you wanted to share your genealogy with another person who has another kind of a
  47. computer?
  48.  
  49. GEDCOM to the rescue!  Most genealogy computer programs can make a GEDCOM file.  So if you wanted to share your
  50. information with another person you would use your genealogy program to create a GEDCOM file. You can put that file
  51. on a floppy disk or send it over a modem to be "read" by the other computer.

  264. Pointer errors can be generated by your genealogy program under certain circumstances.  Until the bugs are deleted
  265. from these programs, InstaRel is required to repair the corrupted GEDCOM that are created by these programs.

  267. Pointer errors can be generated by hardware damage.  If a floppy disk containing a GEDCOM file is damaged, there
  268. may be other errors besides pointer errors.  The current version of InstaRel will only repair pointer errors.

  270. A user can also generate pointer errors by incorrectly editing a GEDCOM file.

  281. This command will start the comparison of the two databases, one of which is called "Yours," and the other

  285. You will also see some of the possible matches scroll up the screen.  If there are many matches, you will not see
  286. any more matches until after the comparison is completed.

  288. The name of the output file that has the matches is called "out.std."  This file will be deleted when you start
  289. another comparison, so it is good to make a backup copy of this file after starting a comparison.
